Can a headphone be 'forward' and still have a big sound stage?

Cuz I've heard people describe the DT-990's as having 'forward' highs AND a large sound stage. I would have thought that these two properties would be mutually exclusive because the more forwards you are, the nearer to the stage you are, which would reduce the sound stage, right? (ie. the 'grado effect')
