I'll throw my 2 bits in for a pair of PSB Alpha Minis or the PSB Alpha A/Vs on the speaker side.

I second this recommedation, my PSBs have really surprised me for what I paid for them. Another option, and probraly what I would do if I had some cash to spend, would be a pair of old Magnepans or Spica TC-50s ($350-400) with a AMC 3030 30W tube integrated amp ($300-350).

Perhaps Bose 901's and he could get a piece of history,

I do believe the 901s are kind of hard to drive though.

I have them. Preferred the sound of it to the Paradigm mini-monitors (thought they were too bright) and the KEF Cresta 2, to name a few. I've not heard the older generation of alphas but these sound great to me, esp at their pricerange (200 for the pair). I'd describe the sound as accurate and smooth, I liked that they were more neutral than the other ones I auditioned. I'd definitely recommend a subwoofer with it however, they don't go very deep.
