I'm currently using just my iphone and BW PX when commuting. I've been thinking about getting a DAP so I can take advantage of the PX's APTX HD capability. But the thing is, I'll likely never use it wired, so if I buy a DAP I'm paying for an onboard DAC and amp I'll never use. What I really need is an DAP that is essentially just a bluetooth transport with APTX HD capability. Does something like that exist?

No. But the Shanling M0 is only $109 and can transmit APTX-HD.
It can also receive LDAC(from Andorid 8.0 & up devices)/AAC(from Iphone) to provide wireless capabilities to your wired headphones/speakers.

Be aware that your iPhone and headphone both support Bluetooth AAC codec, which is audibly transparent at 256kbs (AAC250), while aptX HD is not similarly transparent, despite its higher bitrate.

I have wondered why you cannot buy a dap that is bluetooth only???? Would be able to focus on the best coec selection and best connection in a compact device. must be relatively easy to implement for a manufacturer?

Wow, I can’t believe you pulled up this old post now. I’ve been thinking about this again lately. I’m playing around with the FiiO and Creative AptX lossless dongles atm. They’re a bit clunky to use so I’ve been thinking about getting a second phone that supports lossless. Trouble is it’s only upper mid and flagship phones that have the full AptX, so it’s a lot to pay for just a BT DAP.

What I can’t understand is, if FiiO can make a dongle for $50, why can’t they add BT transmission to their DAPs or the BT line? That would be a much better experience than the dongles imo. Maybe there just isn’t the market for it?
