Hi,

What is the best volume controller currently available on the market, either stepped attentuator or potentiometer?

thanks guys,

For the best volume control I would probably say the Stevens & Billington TX 102 TVC (Transformer Volume Control) or the Slagle TVCs, but then you add either stepped attenuator or potentiometer. So I would say the DACT stepped attenuators would be high on the list. Placette Audio makes a wild 125 step attenuator but I don't know if you could purchase one outside of any of their products.

The Placette is on my wish list. The remote volume control version is only $1000. Pretty cheap for a "highly praised audio componenet".

I wish there was more info on this product, like a review. It's a passive preamp right? I know the $4000. Active preamp is constantly included in lists (TAS) of the very best preamps available. I assume the $1000. is better than other passive preamps? A passive preamp is a possibility for me parly because of it's lower price.

True. What of Vishay S-102 resistors, are they the best? As claimed by Placette.

Supposedly the most transparent sounding resistors out there. Bulk metal foil resistors.. Not cheap though... Coming in at US$11+ a piece (w/o discount) at Percy Audio & more @ other places.

I am now a proud owner of the Placette 3-input passive preamp. It is fan-freakin-tastic! Transparent, detailed, fast as lightning.

It replaced a Creek OBH-12, which was a GREAT remote controlled preamp for the price ($175 used), but the Placette is absolutely better in every way.

Guy (owner of Placette) is replacing the resistor set to work with my ultrasensitive Oris horns for nothing more than return shipping. How cool is that?!?
