Have you heard the Sony D-365 Vertigo? I got one of those for free when I bought my Cosmic used and have been using it ever since, but I don't really have any idea how it compares to any other players since I have almost no experience with different players. I'm curious to know if it's a good player relative to the famous Panasonics.

I own a really old sony D-842k from like six years ago and it sounds very good except for a quick roll off in the treble. I also own a D-EJ815 which has a weak 5milliwatt amp. The EJ815 sounds lifeless with a massive biass towards the treble. It cannot handle high-power demanind headphones at all either.

Supposedly, the best Sony portable CD player is the D-777. They were discontinued quite a few years ago. I tried to acquire one at Ebay two months ago, but the bid skyrocketed to ridiculous prices.

I suppose I should mention that I'm using the player only for its line-out output to my Cosmic, which is powering Ety 4s phones. I know my CDP is definitely the weak link in my system (it's all I have, except for my PS2 and computer drives) but I have no money to buy a real home player. *Sigh*. I am definitely excited about the thought of spending a few hundred dollars on a nice home CDP though and seeing what it can do for my setup. I've heard that the Cosmic can be very revealing of low-quality sources, and I think an old portable CDP probably qualifies.

I suppose I'll have to wait until I graduate and get a job, though. Only six months...

A lot of people say how great the Panasonic SL-CT470 is, but I had one and I didn't find it anything special. Comparing it to my Sony D-E446CK it sounded too dark to me and the bass wasn't as good. It didn't play very loud either (10mw isn't that great compared to 15). It was built very cheaply as well and I knew it wouldn't hold up to anything that my Sony would. After being used lightly for about 5 months I sold it to a good friend of mine cuz his Sony D-EJ611 sucks, and he dropped the Panasonic once on kitchen tile and it instantly refused to read any discs. Nothing we did could revive it.

Someone else on here tried a Sony D-E776CK which is a few years old and he found it sounded better than the Panasonic 470. But then he tried a D-E446CK like mine and said it sounded better than the 776 so maybe mine is a good one to try. You'd have to buy it used though (it's like a 98-99 model). You can find these ones on Ebay for cheap. Arnett if your still around maybe you can help us with comparing the 446 and 776.

The best PCDP I've ever heard is a Denon DCP-150, with my Sony D-777 being second. The Denon, though, is heavy, runs on impossible-to-find batteries (but can run off of external power), and has zero anti-skip

It does have a full IR remote, and a massively overbuilt power supply. With coax digital out, it's STILL a kickass transport, and it has great line-out, with headphone out to rival decent headphone amps. That's what $400 bought you in 1991...

Odeen: what you described is EXACTLY what I would want in a PCDP - MDs for truly portable use, and the PCDP for everything else (transport, travel - everything!)....coax digi out....drool...

If you want a currently available model, consider Panasonic 470, 570, and 780. Consensus on head-fi and on the old headwize seems to be that they are better than currently available Sony's. Of the latter, i've heard only the 925, and i prefer the Panasonic's (the Sony was painfully bright). As for ruggedness, i've never had a problem with either 470 or 780, but i don't recall ever dropping either. The Panasonic's have a far superior anti-skip system, too; I could not run with the Sony 925, but have no problem with 470 or 780 (altho the former occasionally skips with my InCase carrier, for some reason, so i don't use the InCase for running).

Sony 925 remote and resume are way superior to Panasonic, however.
