A 'V' shaped sound signature might be OK for pop but rock music often has a lot of midrange provided by the guitars that will be slightly suppressed by the headphone. Beyerdynamic's DT880 might be a better choice but many people won't like its flat, euphonic-less presentation. Colouration comes at a price of reduced sound quality. Audiophiles need to choose between altering the sound (euphonic/colour/eq) to their preference but sacrifice some sound quality or aiming for minimal colouration/euphonic distortion and accepting music as it was recorded without sacrificing sound quality (or at least losing as little as possible). The industry default is the former and it's as easy as falling of a log to find bass boosted, treble boosted, heavily euphonic headphones/amplifiers in every imaginable combination. Searching for neutrality is much more difficult.

Sennheiser is renowned for its midrange especially the HD580/600/650 but other models also. I haven't heard the DT990's so I can't say how much the 'fun' signature affects the midrange. You could try the HD650, it has a 'thick' bass accentuated sound, nice midrange and slightly rolled off treble. A so called 'dark' headphone. Unlike the HD599 it needs an amplifier to shine However it's more expensive than the DT990.
