Hello all,

I’ve recently started digitizing my old photo collection, and I’m curious about the best practices for photo scanning. I want to ensure that the scanned images maintain the highest quality possible, both in terms of resolution and color accuracy.

What are your recommended settings for DPI, and do you have any advice on scanning older photos that might be faded or damaged? Also, I’m thinking of transitioning some old tapes to digital as well—any tips for that process?

Are there specific apps or software that you’ve found particularly effective for both quality and speed?

For best quality, a flat bed scanner is the best option (it also won't bend photo prints). You can get photo editing software that will let you fine tune color profiles or use a "heal" brush on any areas that might have scratches or such. Since I'm a professional, I've used Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom...I believe Photoshop Elements is cheaper and also capable for all your needs. If you have a lot of photos and want something more automated, there are specialized photo scanners that can scan in bulk:
