Best portable CD player?

For a portable cd player or cassette player, I'd rather have a high quality 5mw headphone output than 40mw of pure crap. I don't listen @ high volumes anyway, and high volumes tend to distort sound, not make it sound better. What's more natural, hearing someone singing right next to you, or speakers amplifying their voice to 120 decibels?

I'm sure it is, but would we want to pay an extra $50 or whatever to have it? I mean, the remote controls practically all the functions on the 925, so I can't see that it wouldn't be too hard to make the RM-MC11EL control a tone attenuator.

Let's face it - PCDP's are geared towards the 'modest' audio enthusiast and not so much for the die-hard "audiophile," whereas the high-end Sony MD recorders seem to target the serious MD user.

Maybe, soemday, we'll get our wish!

YES! It would be worth it. I mean look at some of the newest MD PLAYERS, not recorders, just players, they cost upwards of $300. And for what? They only play MD's. The E75 i have ran for $250 18 months ago.

I think the reason for this is that it distorts at any volume

Laid back? I found the 925's line out in no way laid back, abit upfront if you ask me. I listen to a vast variety of music. I listen to whatever sounds good.

Superbaldguy, I know you are refering to the phones out but I was writing about the line out previously. I said the phones out on the 925 was heaps bad long time ago...Ive always been comparing the line outs, since I would think the thread starter would want a pcdp with a good line out as a portable headphone amp would be a better choice if good sound quality is wanted/required (He said he will be using a hansen amp).

Do any of the newer PCDP's have a decent amp out, in your opinion? It seems that these CD players are more and more catering to the "youthful" public that like lots of bass and could care less for crisp highs.

I will concede the 925 is not the best-sounding PCDP ever made, but I've learned to work around its weaknesses. FWIW, the combo of long battery life, excellent skip-proofing, and slim design make this a good investment. I get more than satisfactory results when hooking my KSC-35's into the headphone jack....

Those clip-ons are very special....

Gloco, I do find that the price of MD players is at the point where one might as well get a recorder, since it's almost as expensive; why can't MD makers produce a reasonably-priced MDP with a small LCD on the body and a wireless remote? Yes, I agree that all MDR's and MDP's should have flexible tone controls....

Arrgghhh you are not listening to me !!!

Im talking about line out *pulls his hair out* not the phones out/"amp out"/headphone out. If you hook anything to the headphone jack, all you will be getting is crappy sound, no matter how good a headphone you plug into it.

Anyways, when I was looking for my "perfect pcdp" I was looking for one with a good phones out, which I couldnt find one. So in the end I went along with one with a nice clean line-out and get a good portable headphone amp (porta corda). I dont use the anti-skip, and the other "extras". Only thing I do use is the remote for track functions. Note: I dont plug anything into the remote ! (please read the latter sentence

)

In short, I couldnt find one with a clean (even desent) headphone amp/output, so had to settle for a nice clean line out instead.

Its not that its "catered to the "youthful" public that like lots of bass and could care less for crisp highs." but more of cost reduction I think.

Also you should compare using the best pcdp headphones out and compare it with the line out + say a porta corda...I bet the difference will be obvious.

You need to get your hand on Sony D-777....and you will be more than satisfied with its headphone amp. Very power and clean. Bass is tight and super punchy. Look for the 777 in Ebay.
Oh..the D777 beats the crap out of EJ01, and D925. I used to have those 2 newers discman...and once..I got the D777, those two were sold.

I wasnt comparing the amp of the 925 vs others...I was comparing its line out vs others.

I didnt buy the 925 for its headphone amp but for the clean line out.

Iriver SlimX. Slight noise through headphones output (no biggie - about the same as the original Airhead) but clean through the line out.

This player plays virtually everything, has good anti skip, can slip into your pants pocket and goes LOUD!!!

I have the Panasonic 570, Sony D-915 and Sony MD-R900 MD recorder - this thing easily sounds as good, if not better, then those players.
