I have a pair of hd650, oppo pm3 and meze 99 all of which i enjoy, however for vocal music (jazz, folk, country, blues) i find the hd650 the best (imo).

What i am asking are there any headphones that surpass the hd650 for this kind of listening, either open or closed, portable or not.

Any ideas?

If you like this lush midrange, I'd look into ZMFs. That plus a tube amp, if you don't have one already.

HD600 is a great choice for vocal, so I don't think you are too far off the mark, especially for dollar for dollar perspective. I also find HE500 to have a pretty magical midrange if you are looking at planar. It also has improved air and treble which helps vocals IMO.

The hd650 is excellent already, the upgrade from it is going to be steep for not much difference. I've had 200 pairs for the business and the Audio Technica ADH1000X I have now is the only thing better, especially for female vocals. We have a couple of HD6XX to compare and for vocals the 1000x is kingpin.

I have a highly modified (pink floyd uk modifier) x-cans v3 with pinkie psu which is excellent although hybrid. It was apparently originally designed for the hd600

I don't know your system, but for me the most important thing is the entire chain (headphones + amplifier) than the headphones themselves. You can buy the most expensive headphones, but without the right amplifier, they will not work
