I would say Shure E2s. Good enough isolation for the NYC subway. Costs about $80.

I second the Shures.

I don't even know what thing you're describing by Sony, but I've always known the Etys and Shures as In-the-ear phones. I suppose I'll call them in-the-canal phones now. Regardless, the Shures are NOT earbuds.

Regardless of what they're called, I think dealmaker was asking for some kind of in-ear type headphone - as opposed to something with a headband - that also provides some isolation and is less than $100. Given that criteria Shure E2s are the best suggestion. If dealmaker wants true earbuds then I agree, E2s are not true earbuds but canalphones. Although, they do not go as deep as etys and really do sort of sit in the ear, not the canal.

Well there are only two pretty decent true "ear buds" out there: the MX500/400 and the Sony 888s, right? And if he can spend up to $100 why not get the Shures which are somewhat similar to ear buds in some ways (the go in the ears, albeit deeper than buds). Much better sound quality.
