What would be the best pair of canal phones for your money? I want something with rich, BUT balanced bass, with clear mids and highs that are bright, but not harsh and over empasized. I currently own a pair of EX51's and really like them with the exception that the mids are very unclear and the highs are a bit piercing. I do not want to end up spending more than $200, and want to avoid spending more than $120.

You've got either the Shure E3c or the Etymotic ER-6i, if you want to spend around the $120 mark.

Of course, for $200 you can get the ER-4P which are very good, they're very balanced, almost completely flat frequency response from the low end to the top end. ER-4P are around $200, if you know where to look. For an extra $80 they are far better than the ER-6i which usually goes for around $120.

You should save up and get Westone UM2, which go for $329. These are majestic sounding canalphones. In my canalphone experience, the Shure and Etymotics can't touch the Westone UM2.

This absolutely classic. The OP posted $100 as his absolute maximum. One minute later, the maximum is boosted to $200, with $120 as preferred.

altopryde656 - what is your source? Do you have an amp?

P.S. Does "alto" in "altopryde" have anything to do with "Palo Alto"?

No amp ER-4P

Amp ER-4S

Both are currently going for a little over $200

Well worth the extra money over the ER-6 or the E3c

I believe that the Shure's are brighter than the Ety's (could be wrong).

I will continue to suggest the Future Sonics EM3's for $99. Some say they're ugly, but I don't think they're that bad, AND the sound is great. I've only compared them with the Shure E3C's, and the EM3's blow them out of the water IMHO.
