So,
I have been using the ATH-50xs for about a year on various instruments (electronic drums+pianos mainly) and sources. So far they have been very versatile headphones, until recently when they have began to crackle (mainly in the right driver) at high points of bass and treble. Right now, I'm running them off of an iPhone 4s with no amp at 60-75% volume, but I have had the same results with my computer and other cables.

The crackling is very prevalent in these songs:

-Summer, Calvin Harris--around 2:40-55 with the heavy guitar strum
-Come a Little Closer, Cage the Elephant--when the song peaks its volume throughout the chorus
-Newbop, Caravan Palace--throughout the song
-Dangerous, Big Data--on bass guitar and vocals (especially on sharp consonants)
Crackling can also be heard on others, but I cannot name them off the top of my head right now.

I plan to open up the headphones tomorrow and clean them, but I'm not sure if that will help any. What could be causing the noise?
