Audio-Technica ATH-M50: Wow! But too bad about the cable.

First time poster here, but I did a lot of reading here before purchasing my ATH-M50 cans. All the positive recommendations here were right on the money - these are amazing at the under $150 price point. Fantastic detail and clarity, extremely comfortable, great looks and build quality. Compared to my old Sonys (also $150), these things make the Sonys sound like weak junk. I'm a believer. Thanks to all for their reports on these phones. I'm enjoying rediscovering all my music.

My only regret is the cable choice - and the problem is I would have had regrets whether I had gone straight (which I did) or coiled. The straight cable is great for, say, late night Rock Band sessions where I can stand 8 feet from the TV. But for listening to music on the computer or iPod, not so great. The pile of cable that spills off my desk and onto the floor, where I'm constantly running over it with the casters on my office chair, is a real pain. As is trying to create an organized pile somewhere on my desk (which already has too much cable clutter). This long cable is always dangling in the way. Guess I'll be pulling out the old twist-tie.

At the moment (at the iMac listening to tunes through my Apogee ONE interface) I would really, really like the coiled cable version.

So...sometimes the straight cable is great, but other times I really wish for coiled.

Wouldn't it make infinitely more sense for Audio-Technica, rather than suffer the expense and hassle of two separate SKUs (straight and coiled cable models), to have a detachable cable that I could swap depending on my specific need at the time? Raise the price $10 and give me both cable types in the box. Result: one SKU, happy customers. Everybody wins.

Bottom line: I love these cans. I hate the cable.

... Drop the cable behind the desk. The cable gets a bit curved around the jack, but it's awwwwwwwwwwwwwwright.

Alternatively, you can wrap the cord around your iMac's base a couple times to shorten the length. You won't be able to switch it around easily though.

Detachable cable: AKG K271.

What's also weird about the cables is that they both supposedly sound noticeably different.

You realize those change based on positioning...

I have the ATH-M50 coiled version, as well as a pair of ATH-AD700 headphones which has a very long cable. I like the M50 better for traveling, for sure.

found out an easy ay is to just coil up the cable to a suitable length, and then use two twist ties to tie up the coiled length.

+1 on making a detachable cable version, though!

Audio-Technica isn't too keen on detachable cables, unfortunately. For their AD, A and W headphone lines it doesn't really matter, but for the M line it would definitely be beneficial.
