Hi, i connected up my card to my dac using the cable that works with other equipment (so the cable is not the issue).

My soundcard works fine with headphones and lineout but when i select spdif there is no signal reaching the dac

I am using various music players - mainly foobar - set to direct sound (asus essence) and in win8.1 the soundcard shows up as functioning perfectly (as it does with headphones and lineout) - i want to use the spdif as my dac is superior to the soundcard dac.

I have tried the various options - spdif bypass, wasapi all variations but nothing works.

Any ideas - i would guess there is a conflict somewhere but I cannot identify it - any software that can do this would be appreciated if nothing else can be suggested.

thanks

I've been using digital coaxial out of my essence stx to my DAC until recently. I use foobar too, but have Windows 7.

What playback device have you selected in Windows sound settings? If I remember correctly I had it as something like 'Xonar essence SPDIF'. Likewise for foobar playback output settings.

I found sometimes restarting the music player or computer after changing the settings would sort the problem.

If you have various music players open at the same time, try with just one open.

Hope it helps.

Did you disable the motherboard's on-board audio, in the BIOS, sometimes an active on-board causes issues with an add-on internal sound card.

In the Asus control panel is "S/PDIF Out" enabled and set to PCM (not Dolby Digital Live)
I'm assuming Analog out is set to Headphone.

You could also try installing these third party drivers

Yes all of these, apart from the analog is set to speakers as i maximise the volume for spdif out and this would blow my headphone drivers away

the alternative drivers make no difference - i have tried both - although the blue is a better colour for the control panel!

thanks

You could try deleting the sound card drivers and remove the Essence STX from the computer then, boot up the computer once with no sound card installed, then turn off computer reinstall the STX and drivers.
