I just bought the NAD Viso hp50 headphones (Amazing sounding for the price!!) and I use them mainly on my iPhone and desktop. The quality that I get out of the iPhone 5 is way superior than my desktop onboard  (Realtek ALC892) sound.

I am looking for an upgrade to reach the quality that my iPhone gets or even better. I've been doing research and a lot of people recommend the Asus Xonar DX or essence. The essence is kinda out of my price range for now but is the quality that much different from the Xonar DX?

Another option is I have my dad's Sony e9000es Pre amp from ages ago. This option is FREE! If I use an optical out cable from my onboard sound to the sony pre amp, would the sound quality be any good for my headphones? Since the sony pre amp is super old, I attached a link with the specs. I don't know what they mean though....t

I'm new at this so please, your input is greatly appreciated!
