Okay, so here's my story.

I had been using Kazaa Lite for a while now and ever since I started using it, spyware would start appearing on my computer and I would get pop-ups like crazy, and this eventually led to my whole hard drive needing to be re-formatted.

Now I know that the general consensus around here is that downloading mp3s is, technically speaking, wrong. But personally I believe that it is morally okay as long as the individual who is using the program does not abuse the system. Since Napster and Kazaa came around, the amount of cds I buy has multiplied a few times over. I own about 150 cds, and don't plan on stopping anytime soon. My use for Kazaa was not to download albums instead of buying them, but instead to find out about music that otherwise I would not be able to hear without dropping significant amounts of cash that could be better used towards tuition or the like. I've blindly bought too many albums only to find that they just weren't worth the money for me. Laying down $100 on 6 cds just to find out that only 2 of the cds were worth the money can get pretty emotionally tiring once the regret settles in. Especially considering that I really don't have a lot of money to waste.

Excuse my rambling, to the point:

I'd like to download a filesharing program so that I can listen to new music, but I need one that won't turn my computer to mush. I've tried KazaaLite and the claims that it's spyware-free don't seem to ring true. Any suggestions as to a program other than Kazaa??

Thanks a bunch.

PS. I know that sometimes it isn't good to mention P2P programs on Head-Fi. If anyone wants this thread deleted for any reason, be it security or just in case, then that's perfectly fine by me, I understand completely. Cheers.

I've found WINMX to be relatively pain free.

If you must use KaZaa then use the Lite version as this doesn't suffer the spyware issues of the full version.

As a precaution, I always use Ad-Aware 6.0 from Lavasoft to do a scan for Cookies and various other bits of spyware on my system.

Safe surfing!

Try using the new wave stuff like BitTorrent and Direct Connect / DC++

for DC++/DC there is usually a hub on most campus networks for transfers in the 1mb/sec range.

As for BitTorrent, i usually use supernova, but there are lots of places to get really hard to find stuff using torrent.

Its not really p2p, but its alot less risky than p2p and in many cases faster (plus no spyware).

No one has heard of Soulseek?

In terms of good quality music, this is the BEST. do a google search for the download page. It's completely spyware free, been using it for more than a year now.

You might want to try MLDonkey (http://www.nongnu.org/mldonkey/) - very capable piece of software. Source available, too.

I dont dl music, i just use file sharing progs for shows, so torrent and DC are best ways to stay up to date.

...wait, thats not 100% true, i have about 80 gigs of videogame music, but that doesnt really count.

If you really want Kazaa use the K++edition its spyware free with some nice features. Also you could have downloaded something with spyware on it so use ad-aware and spy bot search and destroy. ANother is E-mule(which I hear is ok)
