Anyone try this DIY amp kit?

Looks like a fun project, but not a ton of power to work with. They don't mention output impedance in the specs too. For the price you can get a used Topping A70 Pro or SMSL H400 (I've got both). They offer to assemble it if that seems daunting. Without reviews for things like noise levels I'd get a known model that's been measured on ASR.

I’ve already got a pretty nice solid state and a hybrid, looking for a full tube amp. The assembly part is what’s tempting me over a comparably priced off the shelf amp, get to build it and customize the enclosure, etc.

That range of output power for an OTL amp is pretty typical. Rare to see huge wattage (nor is it generally needed).

Not a big fan of ASR measurements for tubes. Amir has never met a tube amp he’s liked. ASR focuses too much on numbers for their methodology to be useful for tubes. By nature they distort and have poor (in comparison) to SS power numbers. The only way to judge a tube amp is with the ears.

** the same goes for SS amps, HYB amps, headphones, DACs, loudspeakers, phono cartridges, turntables ... 🤷🏻‍♂️

The output impedance is insanely high!!
Combined with a low power output this amp is badly designed and barely unusable with most headphones.
ASR is focused on numbers mainly for good reasons, before the romantic audiophile wording, an amp is still an electronic device.

Price seems a bit high for the components you are getting. Other than the ease of sourcing, the whole point of kits is that because they can source the components at better economies of scale than you can do yourself for a single kit, a kit should be a more economical than buying all the components loose in single quantities. Not sure that is the case here; at first glance this seems to be the cost of buying all the components separately plus then some...

Yeah, the big thing is that it's in Canada and with the current border situation I'm trying to avoid shopping from the US. I'm going to scrap this idea and look into a HeadWatt 6DJ8 build instead. That gets a fair amount of praise and I should be able to source everything (but the Edcor Transformers) in Canada.

Sure but music is still a soundwave and the purpose of a good amplifier is to amplify as close as possible the original signal, and most important, the musician intentions.
A badly designed amp with obvious flaws will significantly degrade the original signal.

Considering the damping factor should be at least 1/8, the output impedance of this amp is a nonsense.

This is not the conception of High Fidelity.
Audio equipment are just tools at the service of music, not the opposite...
