Wondering if anyone has had any experience with the PHILIPS MCD702 system.

Well... I've never seen it before in my life, but if I had to take a wild guess, I'd say it probably isn't what most of us would consider 'HiFi'...

For starters, that total 50W is going to be PMPO so you can halve that for a more realistic RMS number ~20-25W between both channels. Then halve that again for RMS per channel ~10-12W RMS.

So IMO: Not with a ten foot pole.

I thought that the ribbon tweeter was a cute idea on their part and wasn't sure if anyone had heard it. The watts/channel doesn't really bug me one way or another - with this type of system I wouldn't be looking for anything room filling anyways, just something decent and pleasing to listen to. Thanks

Hmm... I would like to buy something like that for my parents for christmas, around the same price and all, but I want something good quality. I googled that system and appearntly it only has a 24-hour clock (no 12 hour) and when you turn it on the volume always starts at 10, not where you left it.

Anyway, anybody got suggestions on what I should get my parents? A nice all in one package deal like this around $200 is what I am looking for. It's main purpose would be playing CD's. No surround sound.

I have seen it in store, ribon tweeter is just marketing, sound is not exalted.

I auditioned one of these in my local Best Buy. I spent a while with test tones to determine its FR limits and then I listened it for a while. Personally it sounded pretty good for what it was - it isnt going to go very loud so if you like loud music and have a big room I would forget it but I seriously considered one for my office system. Of course the speakers are small so low bass is limited and it was a smidge boxy sounding (which in the end is why I didnt go for it, but I nearly did) but you cannot expect too much from a mini system.
