I've always found myself liking rum more than any other spirit so I started buying some variety to try them out and see what I like. Before all of these my only experience was Bacardi and Lamb's.

So far I have bought (in this order):

Appleton Estate VX
Flor de Cana 5 Year Black Label
Bacardi 8 Year Old
Mount Gay Eclipse (gift)
Cruzan Diamond 5 Year

The VX is definitely strong in flavour. It is a little rough to take neat or with water/ice, however it tastes very good in certain mixed drinks (makes a strong Cuba Libre). I bought a 1.14L bottle for $30CDN.

I didn't like the Flor de Cana Black Label at first, finding it rather light on taste. After a while I started to enjoy it neat, but I have yet to find a good mixer for it. It was $23CDN for 750mL.

The Bacardi 8 is the first one that I actually thoroughly enjoyed drinking neat or with ice.
I was reading about it and apparently its the only Bacardi available in Canada that is imported. The others i guess are mixed or blended inside Canada. It definitely has the fanciest bottle of all the ones I have, including a foil top and cork.

It cost $31CDN for 750mL.

The Mount Gay Eclipse was a gift and was bought at an American duty free ($15US for 1L), so it is 80 proof instead of 86 available in Canada. I was kind of disappointed getting it as I wanted to try the premium Mount Gay Extra Old. However, I only tried the Eclipse once and I think I like it as a sipping rum. It's also supposed to be quite a good mixing rum.

The Cruzan is unopened, but it was a good deal at $21CDN for a 750mL bottle.

Others that I really want to try are Havana Club 7 Anos (not available in the US), Pusser's Navy, Gosling's Black Seal, El Dorado 15 Year Old, and Matusalem Gran Reserva.

I am also kind of interested in Cachaca (Brazilian spirit made from sugar cane juice), and want to try Agua Luca, but it is not available in Canada.

The US website indicates its only available in a few states.

I'd like to hear anyones opinions or experiences with rum or cachaca.

Myer's Dark is something I have heard of, but haven't been able to find out much more about it, as it doesn't have an official website.

BC Liquor stores have the 750mL bottles for $21CDN. However, as far as dark rums go, I think i would want to try Goslings Black Seal first ($30CDN for 750mL).

I love a morgan's spiced if i'm mixing it. That with coke and lime is superb.

As a sipping rum, the morgans is still fairly passable, because of it's sweetness, but for preference, I like appleton estate extra. It's a 12 year old, and absolutely sublime. Yum.

Love it!!!
I spent a year in Belize and the beer and water there is so iffy (Chunga's Revenge inducing iffy at that

) Rum was the drink of choice. Usually a local brew called Caribbean..probably not available anywhere else.
But now that I'm in the US it is Pussers British Naval Rum (either red or blue label) and I think I have an Appletons on the go as well...I'll have to post again tonight after I get home and check out just what I have in the drinks cabinet.
I know this is not what the purist's would have you do, but I only drink it with ice and 7Up (or similar 'lemonadey' type soda)...Blasphemy I know, but man does it taste good. No rum and Coke for me...Now Pernod and Coke..thats a whole new ballgame

Don't drink much rum like I use to when I was younger and could tolerate it. Used to drink Ron Bacardi amber and black label alot with coke. Haven't gotten into the whole Capt Morgan and coke thing. Some co-workers of mines from Australia brought me back a bottle of Bundaberg rum. Looks like I'm going to have to crack the bottle and give it a try as I was told it's quite good.

Pirate beverages with Coke is OK, but pirate beverages by themselves make my stomach turn (they didn't the first couple times, but then there was that one time when . . . well, I can't drink straight pirate beverages anymore -- let's leave it at that

).

EDIT: Friend recommended I edit the post so Head-Fi wouldn't get in trouble. He'll probably yell at me for the way I did it but oh well.

The only two rums I like are Captain Morgan's Private Stock & Bacardi 151. Sadly my local liquor stores don't have any really high end rum
