I was disappointed by the reviews of portable CD/MP3 players, so I rather decided
to buy a memory (compact flash) based MP3 player to use on the move (NEX ia).

Now I am searching for something I could use at home for listening to my normal
audio CD's and CD's with MP3 on them. Would be great if DVD player can play
MP3's from DVD-r/rw media too. I'd also use it to watch DVD movies of course.

Do any of stand-alone DVD players have a good enough headphone out
to not need a dedicated headphone amp?

Any recommendations for good stand-alone DVD players for about $200?

Also, what is the entry price for stand-alone players supporting DVD-A?

I researched forums a bit, these are the findings:
(Please correct me if needed and make your vote.)

For lowest price range (up to $100):
-- "Pioneer DV-656-A" for US$80 (used), by "Dusty Chalk".
-- "Philips DVD-724-AT" for $90, by "AdamZuf".
-- "Pioneer DV-454" for $100, by "pbirkett".

For low price range (up to $200):
-- "Pioneer DV-563A-S" for $180, by "Koui".
-- "Philips 763" for $190, "omer".

For middle price range (up to $500):
-- "Philips DVD-963SA" for $400, by many.
-- "Denon DVD-2900" for $500, by "Wully Wu".

Better DVD picture than the Philips 963sa—does MP3, MPEG,DTS, Dolby everthing (pass through) no headphone jack. Philips has much better redbook sound, about the same for 5.1—DVI output for the best picture needs a DVI input into your display device. Please check the link below for much info about this player before you buy as there have been qc issues. avs forum also has the D-1 on a Powerbuy, 179.00. Mine has been flawless after tweaking the video resolution.
