Nils Frahm is a composer, and plays pianos built by a friend of his. Their current project is a vertical piano that's close to 4.5 meters tall; the length of the strings improves various aspects of the piano's tones.
The recording to which the article links is made on a smaller prototype version that's 3.7 meters tall. I have never heard anything quite like this. While the typical grand piano tends to be very percussive, this one is more subtle, almost sounding at times as if it's being played with a feather. It's fascinating to listen to, and often beautiful.
I also like his idea for the Piano Day holiday, on the 88th day of the year (March 29), just for fun and joy. What more reason is needed?
