Alternatives to Ipod ... ?

G'day,

I'm toying with the idea of getting an Ipod or something similar. Looking around the web, it seems the most common names are Nomad Jukebox 3 and Nomad Zen.

What are the opinions on these? How do they rank against each other? Which would be recommended? And what is the sound out of one versus the other?

No reason why you should but if you do get swayed by the looks of the ipod - make certain its a US spec not Euro. The Euro models are volume capped to a level that renders them useless. Personally, having owned a 3rd gen model I preferred the ergonomics of the 2nd gen (so you save money if you can still find a 20gb)

I switched to Zen last week. Half the price and twice the sound. If you want to impress your mates buy an ipod, if you want to impress your ears go for the Zen. I just matched mine to a pair of Senn HD25 Pro's and am very pleased.

Jukebox i'm told is at least as good sound wise but just too big for me.

Have a long hard look at the forums for reliability issues - both seem to have faults (though ipod for windows seems to get the most complaints)

Software from creative isn't great but is ok.

Rip with EAC/LAME whichever you choose.

Switched from NJB to iPod and am happy, so I wanted to say it's just not about impressing your friends. The Zen (portability) and NJB (outputs, recording) should definitely be considerations though as should the iRivers.
