I got the 701's ten years ago. Immediately I was displeased with the lack of bass. Put them in storage until now. Took them out. Put this mod on
I'm the pic are the materials i used to turn them into closed back cans.
The tone is changed - mids and highs and stage still light years ahead of BO H9 $499 with almost comparable bass, and Bowers PX7 $400-500 has better bass but mids and highs can't touch the 701.( I was at Best buy's earlier for comparison) Clarity is still way above anything in this range, much more mellow tone and much more bass. It still can't properly process heavy bass songs tho. I'm playing it with a cheapo rechargable 100mw amp that I keep plugged in with BASS switch.
It's playing (some) songs so enjoyable now.
P.s. I just air guitared the sh!t out of Dire Straights OUATITW streamed in my cell from YT
Can't remember enjoying a song this much EVER with the 701's.

Perhaps Samuel Barber - Agnus Dei and Catholic Hymns - Pange Lingua Gloriosi hit even more amazing ( I'm not a Catholic I just ran across those songs)

Amazed how good certain songs sound on closed back 701's.
The best they sell at Best Buy got nothing on it. The 701's were WAY too airy and sharp before to be enjoyable for casual listening
