Hi everyone, I'm considering buying akg q701 or dt990 mainly for rock, electro, screamo. Because I already have ath-ad900x for listening to vocals, and classical and I love it sound signature but I want something bright more bass, little bit faster and more fun in metals.
I only have the fiio e10k to pair with them dunno if it's good enough.

I currently own the AD900x and I've owned the Q701 and DT990 in the past, so hopefully I can give you some perspective here.

Q701 and AD900x are fairly similar overall. I personally like the AD900x better as it has more punch in the bass and more depth and air in the soundstage. Q701 sounds more laidback, less aggressive, maybe a little more deep bass but less punch. Basically a less fun AD900x with similar strengths.

DT990 definitely is bright and has more bass than Q701 and AD900x, but it is also slower than the AD900x.

IMO, you should spend a little more and get a Hifiman HE-400 (I also own this one). A used one costs about the same as a new Q701. This is the only headphone I know of that checks all your boxes--it has way more bass than the AD900x (but not too much, the bass is very well controlled), the bass goes deeper and hits harder, it is faster overall with better layering, and it's a very fun and aggressive sounding headphone overall for rock, electro, and metal. The HE-400 is pretty bright but I wouldn't necessarily say it's brighter than the AD900x.

You have around $250 budget? I currently own ad900x and dt990 pro 250. Dt990 has a good bass, but It needs good amp. If you willing to go a bit more then I suggest you look at he-400. It has really good details and good bass extension that are well control. If you still want the sound signature of Audio techica, then looks at ad1000x $300 or ad2000x $500.

Welp I've tried the new he400i before but I feel It really flat neutral to certain extent I don't feel the fun anymore and I prefer the detail and clarity of ad900x(am I crazy?).But don't get me wrong I still love it ,the mids and bass is beautiful and very well rounded headphones.I don't have the chance to try the old he400 , it quite hard to find one in my city but I will give it a shot then

So you want upgrade version of ad900x, then you should look at ad1000x or ad2000x. They both use the same driver, but ad2kx made with metal.

Tbh I'm looking for some sidekick for rock, metal and electro although I'm more mid/treble head. I'm kinda happy with what ad900x bring so far and when I tried the he400i few months ago I was more concerned about what I'm used to listen on the ad900x but come to think again it might be the right choices for what the ad900x left. Thank for all the advices.
Btw is there any different between the new 400i and old 400. When I tried the new he400i it weight like a tank compare to the ad900x.

The old HE-400 is significantly heavier than the new 400i.

I have an only heard the HE-400, but I can tell you that people who have heard both tend to agree that they are two completely different headphones.
