Hi All,
I'm looking into the AKG-K1000s based on all the raves I've been hearing. If it's really better than the HD-600s (which to my ears are very impressive already), then I'm there! But after reading this thread, I'm still confused.

Okay, so it wants a regular power amplifier because it's voltage and current hungry. I got that part. But uh, how does connections work? Physically, what's on the end of the wire of the AKGs? A mini-plug? A 1/4" plug? XLRs?!? I get the impression I'm supposed to connect them to the binding posts of a pair of power amplifiers somehow?
If so, has anyone any experience with driving them with the Antique Sound Labs WAV-8's?

Thanks,

Alleria

The K-1000's come with an adapter cable which allows you to connect them to any conventional speaker output terminal of an amp.

Happy Listening!

the connection is XLR, and they come with an adapter to hook them to speaker terminals. I would strongly advise against using the K1000's with the wave 8's; the wave 8's are simply not good enough to sound good with the K1000's. Too much grunge, unbalanced sound, etc.

Thanks for the info! Looks like I should be looking for a new power amp or integrated amp 1st then!

Since you said that, I suggest you get the HD600's instead. AKG is good, but it's also more expensive and it's hard to find an amp for it now, unless you want to spend more. Also, you need a better source for the AKG 1000's. My CD player isn't good eough IMO.

LOL -- the HD600s are very good. I have 2 pairs already, actually. I'm just looking for the next step up, mostly. I can deal with speakers, but am new to the strange world of high-powered amplifiers for headphones.

Hi Alleria,
For the K1000 headphones, you don't need high power, but you need very, very, very, very clean power. You need 1 watt at 120 ohms, that's all, but it had better be the best little watt you ever heard or you WILL hear the shortcomings.

ok, my bad. Then how about a Cary 300SEI?

It can drive HD600's, AKG K1000's and high efficient speakers.

But it costs from $1500-2000 for a used one.

eeeg, sounds a bit pricy for now, esp adding $500 for the headphones into the equation! I suppose I'll just hold off for now and try upgrading to some Headroom reference amps for my Senns.

Connect the K1000 to a decent integrated amp and you get as good service as with a Sennheiser HD600 powered by a dedicated headphone amp. For the same cost, if you already own a decent integrated amp.

The dedicated SAC K1000 class A amp will do a much, much better job than most integrated amps. Improving furthermore will require multiple kilo bucks on tube amps, but this is on heresay only. Consider to upgrade your source before going that way!
