8/22khz and 16/44.1khz are alot different...

but 16/44.1khz and 24/48 are hard to tell apart sometimes...

with 24/192khz theres a pretty large difference...

Other opinions?

The difference between the 8 bit SoundBlaster AWE64 and a good 16 bit card like the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz is like night and day. The differences between 16/44 and 24/88.2 (I prefer 88.2 to 96) are also very noticeable (even on the same card using media that is 16/44.1 with upsampling), but I cannot hear the difference between 88.2 and 176.4 or 96 and 192. Perhaps after 88.2/96 the limitations of the CD format itself rears its head and only higher-density media like vinyl, SACD and DVD-Audio may benefit from such high sample rates as 176 and 192. However, I haven’t tested this theory with my DAC1…

Most people don't have the 24/192 original to compare so it's hard to judge between them.

16/44.1khz and 24/48 is a bit difficult unless your equipment is more resolving. But most 24/48 material is usually better sounding. The extra resolution makes it have more depth. You can commonly hear them in DVD movies.

Using the M-Audio Transit hardware modified for S/PDIf coax, the 24/96 setting is significantly better than the 16/44.1. In fact, I can categorically say that it is better than any transport that I have ever auditioned or modded. I playback through a modded Perpetual P-3A DAC. This is by-far the best CD source I have ever heard, and I have heard the best: Audio Aero, Electrocompaniet, EMM labs etc..

I've heard that the human ear cannot technically tell the difference betwen 24 and 16 bit playback, according to my dad.

That's not true with any decent eqipment. Check out this FAQ on 24-bit recording.

Well that's certainly good news for me. Doesn't affect jitter, eh? In fact, he doesn't say anything about jitter at all in this faq.
