So I'm thinking of spending around 600USD on a 2.1 speaker system. Its been a while since I've looked at any speaker systems so I don't really know whats out there and how much its all going for. I'm not afraid of going with used products too, if that helps any.

Only gear I got is my Echo AF2 and I can get my bro's sub woofer off of him for like 30$. It would be nice to have more than one source. I really wouldn't mind a receiver with monitors and a sub. Although I know thats a more expensive route. And its for music, with a movie here and there.

Yes, at my computer desk, so bookshelf monitors would be best.

I will recommend the Mackie MR5. It costs around $320-360/pair depending on where you buy them from. But since your budget is much higher you can probably look at their higher versions as well. They are powered speakers so you may at max need a pre-amp.

get a t amp or nuforce, a pair of fostex drivers (eg tekton design) and a little hsu sub
