I am assuming that the 4polar is only with the Auvi units

Actually at the latest Windows smartphones have a 4-pole setup - but that is for the stero + mic. One example is the I-mate Jam. Check the XDA developers forums or the Compact Jam forums for more into.

The I-mate Jam is actually a superb music player BTW, throw a 1GB SD card in there and free BetaPlayer Software and you got yourself a nice MP3/Ogg/WAV/FLAC/WMA player.

I used th have the Palm Tungsten E and that was actually a superb sounding player as well. The concept of the dedicated MP3 player may actually be a limited one.

To be honest I know nada about the I-book's jack. But what I described is the setup of the single jack on the I-mate Jam for sure.

stupid question but ...

so they have a 4-polar jack for stereo/mic so I'm guessing it's no 4-polar jack which outputs the benefits of the MD-33 4 polar jack.. correct?

i believe the O2 XDA Mini is also a copy of the imate jam. i have the O2 XPhone II and the sound is very good too. i think they are all made by a taiwan company called HTC. it serves as a very capable flash-based mp3 player and it is good when i do not need to bring too much music around and i don't have to bring along another device.

I'm considering buying the A780 from motorola. but it's got a 2.5mm jack.

I will use a MD 33S on this machine ... my questions are:

1.//wil the A780 be adequate for good sound?
2.//is there a 4-pole 3.5mm to 2.5mm plug?

The four-conductor 3.5mm plug is proprietary to Sharp's Auvi MD players and isn't used on anything else unless it's homegrown. That aside, the 4-conductor 3.5mm plug itself has possibilities, if unused plugs and jacks could be sourced...

Dual mono portable DIY amps, anyone?

Well, for that to be of any use, you'd still have to have a balanced source... so... that'd actually be kind of dumb. What I get for not going to bed yet. -.-'
