The sound quality is very good. Because it comes with decent parts:

Low pass filter: OPA1612
OP+BUF: OPA1612+LMH6643
For me, a HIFI music player usually has OP+BUF headphone out. Many cheap DAPs doesn't have it. Don't buy them. And some expensive DAPs use discrete amplifiers and that's another level.

Good review mate! Love my Rockbox'd X3 but the battery life is horrible. It also gets quite hot under normal use. Neither are massive issues, but are certainly annoying.

Agreed. Battery life is pretty abysmal, though this is more due to bad optimisation rather than lacking battery capacity.

You don't tell us if your battery life findings are based on stock or Rockbox firmware... There's not enough info about SOUND apart the odd comparison to a five year-old smartphone.
