Its a good IEM, I owned them twice, was about to call it quits because they were suited for laying down at night. Obviously, that never happened and things escalated far out of control.
The W40. IIrc, Westone officials said that the drivers, crossover and acoustic filter were the same as in the W4/R; the only thing that has changed are the tips, design and MMCX instead of 2-pin connector. So if there is a (small) tonal difference, it would be caused by the new/different ear tips.
Still love my W4Rs. Have always found that they are quite sensitive to amping. Straight out of "consumer" sources like smartphones and tablets with no amplification, the mid-bass "bloat" is quite prominent. But with proper amping the W4Rs sound more balanced, at least to my ears. Tried quite a few different portable amps and each affected the sound quite differently. Eventually took a leap of faith to order an Alo Continental V2 blind and luckily it was a great pairing for me.
I've to agree the soundstage on this IEM is really good (for an IEM that is).
I keep reminding myself I need to be extra careful with my pair, since they don't make them anymore. It will be a very sad day if I break or lose it (omg the horror).
I just bought some used, hopefully they sound good for my taste, I am sure they will sound way better than the shure 215 I use for the gym. I also bought a dragonfly to amp these babies with my iPhone. I will be rocking at the gym, I hope LOL
The SE215 is bassier (esp. more sub- and midbass) and has got the more forward upper mids; it's also not relaxed in the middle highs (but has got somewhat subdued upper treble). W4R's resolution and speed are on a totally different level though.
I'm really looking forward to your impressions, as both in-ears are quite different.
Do you prefer the Westone 4R over the Dunu Dn2000 or 2000J? I'm trying to decide my next universal iem upgrade, but I have a big doubt with these options. Why the Dunu or Why the Westone?
