The Telefunken Audion:
A high end experience from the moment you begin un-boxing,
... that continues as you bring them to your ears.
**A note about the photography: It was all taken by me and that is my lovely wife posing with the Audion. She is not just modeling though; she was actually listening to music the whole time we were doing the photo-shoot. This did cause some issues, as these are closed back and isolate pretty well. So half of the time I was yelling, “Turn to your left, your left”! “Move Farther Back”! “Stop moving so much!” “Don’t stick your tongue out at me!” I’m sure our neighbors loved us. All I know is my wife is awesome and I was so thrilled to have her help me out with the review. Speaking of the review, let’s move on to that now.**
*Background Info*
These were built in celebration of TELEFUNKEN's 110 Anniversary (1903 to 2013)
You will see this engraved into the headband as shown below.
*Packaging*
Presentation, the Audion has this cover in spades. First of all, it comes in a freaking padded briefcase! How cool is that? Not only great for looks, but protects your headphones in the process. Grab the handle and you are on the go with your premium headphones. Everything screams high end; the red flowing cloth that the Audion rests on, the individually wrapped detachable cables and did I mention the briefcase???
*In the Box*
- 2 x Replacement Earpads
- 1/8 to 1/4" (3.5 to 6.35mm) Adapter
- Keys for the Case
- Detachable Cable 3m
*Fit*
The memory foam pads are plush, big and they fit well around the ears. The headband is soft and adjusts quickly and easily for the perfect fit. The Audion are large, but not too heavy. Headband pressure is slightly more than subtle; you will feel the presence of them on your head. The earpads can cause a slight warming around the ears, but this to be expected for this type of material. They never become overly warm though, due to some nicely placed ventilation holes.
*Build*
As you can see by the close-ups, the Audion is nicely put together, with quality materials used. Nicely presented wood cups make up the bulk of the headphone, giving them a classic and mature look. The Pure OFC Detachable Cable is as beautiful as it is well made.
*Sound*
Bass – The lows are very present. The bass is supple and lush. You will hear a substantial punch that can slightly creep into the mids from time to time. Lows may be slightly overpowering for some, as it does resonate a bit moving up and down the frequency range.
Mids – Are a highlight. I love how they are so amazingly clear and borderline forward. Vocals come through strong, yet still eloquently. Both female and male voices are portrayed realistically and without and veil. I love the mids on the Audion.
Highs – Can be described as slightly rolled off, giving the signature of warmth to the rest of the sound. Detail is still there, it has not faded away. These have an easy sound that is great for extended listening.
Isolation – Sound does not want to leave, nor does it want to get in, thus the screaming at my wife during the photoshoot and her responding over and over, “I can’t hear what you are saying”!
Soundstage – Here was a little surprise. According to Telefunken’s website the Audion uses, “Frequency response adapted to proper represent live soundstage under restrictions of a closed headphone construction Frequency response adapted to proper represent live soundstage under restrictions of an closed headphone construction”. Bottom line, whatever they did, it works. While soundstage will not match that of some open back headphones, the Audion does quite a good job at creating distance and instrument separation.
*Overall thoughts*
There is something special about the Telefunken Audion. With its fun, warm sound signature, to the way it presents itself with it sophisticated looks. I very much enjoy using them, they are able to maneuver their way through a verity of music styles. A fun headphone, with a high end feel.
P.S. Thank you to my beautiful wife for her help with this review. Love you babe!
