Thank you again for the video.

I see how you rate the sound quality but I have a couple of questions:

Though tons of ppl like them, its hard to guage their sound quality vs cans within their price bracket based on comments. How would you rate their overall fidelity vs other like priced cans.

Also how hard are they to drive, as other comments suggest they need a lot of power. Maybe as demanding as say a th600/900?

Thank you

Could you elaborate the mid-thin sound ? How does it compare with Audeze LCD-X and XC ? Thank you for the review :)

From my post in the main thread:

The drop at 500 Hz (low mids) causes them to sound somewhat thin. Combine that with the booming mid-base and you end up with a sound where the base and mids sound distinctly separate, but somewhat at odds with each other.

I think if the bass is going to be strong, it should have impact. I actually like them better out of the Bakoon because the impedance curve results in stronger bass. The sound seems like they were trying to find a middle ground in everything.

I listened to the MDR-Z7, TH600/900, and LCD-X/XC for 3-10 minutes each and can answer some questions.

To grizzlybeast, it is basically a Denon D2000 with D600 portability features. The earcup is like the D2000, only slightly deeper and as the same plastic cup housings in the same shape. The headband applies pressure to its center, rather than along the front and back side like the D2000. It has detachable cables, but is bulky and still has pricey replacement parts, like the D600. As for the sound, it is has the somewhat v-shaped sound of the D2000 with the slightly wider presentation of the TH600, so it is between the D2000 and the TH600. It is slightly less detailed, but slightly less wood-colored (ex. less tonal emphasis) than the TH900.

To rich bass, the mid-thin sound is very reminiscent to the Denon D2000 and is there with a decent amount of quality, but the bass and treble is somewhat more present. Compared to the LCD-X, the LCD-X is better on everything, except portability and isolation. Compared to the LCD-XC, the LCD-XC has a more even presentation (you can say it is a "flatter response") and is more wood-colored with a lot more detail in the mids, though the MDR-Z7 has a more neutral response in the bass and treble and may have better isolation.

Of course, this was over a total of 25-45 minutes of listening time between a comparison between these 5 cans mentioned above and a comparison with many other cans (ex. HD800, SR-009, Abyss, etc.), so Currawong will give more details, and maybe some opposition to my post.

^thanks bud!
I just ask because people are comparing them to summit fi gear where they are failing. I just wanted to know how they fair against mid/upper fi like th600,AD,Pandora hopevi, if they are inferior in fidelity.

Personally, I prefer MDR-Z7 over the TH600. To me, there is too much resonance with the TH600 magnesium cups, and the earpads make the presentation too wide. I think Sony capitalized by releasing something for those who want to buy a new-and-improved Denon D2000, but it is for $450 more than what the D2000 cost. At $699, you can find better, but it would have to be heavily modded.

Would you say that these will be good for EDM? The price is really cheap for a flagship. I used to own Edition 8's, currently own T5P's, etc... They were all too bright for my taste and lacked in Mid-Bass. Would it be compareable to the Edition 8 or T5P in terms of clarity, details, etc... You're really comparing these closed back cans which cost $560 to $1500 openbacks, not a really fair comparison. I would want them compared to the TH900, The T5P, the Edition 8, and other cans, etc... It's still 1/3 of the price of many of those, which is quite amazing, especially since it's made in Japan!

@Currawong
I’m looking to buy this headphone and have a few questions about it. If the owners could help me out it would be great.

Please… pretty please.

A little background: I’m not a fan of uber neutral, linear sounding cans, they work well with certain types of music but for me they r ultimately not a fun listen. I like my headphones to have warm, engaging, punchy and detailed sound with a prominent and healthy bass body. Bass should not be boosted but what is there should not be presented in a diluted manner.

I like to FEEL it not just hear it. I DON’T WANT ANOTHER THIN, COLD SOUNDING HEADPHONE.

I had the HD 650(used with HA160D) for about 7-8 months and for listening to the music I listen to it just wasn’t right. For me it was brilliant for watching bluray titles and Netflix but for most real world contemporary music it just didn’t do it for me.

I listen to a lot of rock, some metal, pop, Blues, R&B and some rap, but mostly rock. Stuff like Blur, oasis, radiohead, black keys, the who, queens of the stone age, AC/DC, black Sabbath you get the picture.

Will be using the Z7 with HA160 D for listening to music watching bluray titles, netfilx, youtube etc. Source PC> Jriver 19 with jplay driver.

Most of my music is 16 bit flac the rest 320kbps mp3

A friend works for Sony and through him I’m getting a brand new one from Sony for nearly $200 less than retail.

Currently I own the Senn IE80 and the Beyer COP.

THE QUESTIONS
Removable Earpads ? Real leather?
The mids: Are they really recessed or thin sounding as some people have pointed out??
Bass: is it detailed and does it have detail throughout the bass frequencies, and is it deep reaching with good pacing and PRAT??
Sub bass: Does it have body, power, kick, slam and presence??
Clarity and  openness?
Sound stage?
Detail retrieval??
Treble??
Comfort and clamping pressure?? Comparable to HD650
