Not trying to go the full ASR route here but since you cannot listen to a DAC without an AMP connected to it, is it really the DAC’s sound you’re listening to? Isn’t it the amp? You say, in the begining of your review, that you hear certain sonic characteristics but in the end, you go on and suggest different amp pairing, according to what type of sound one desires. Kinda contradictory statements there.

So very very subjective...

Reviews have been calling this a giant giant-killer. Bought it and see how it fares with my D300 as a giant-killer.

@exhale i don't see any contradiction here, ST-AMP's output is reference sounding, pairing it with the SU-1 sounds rather uncoloured to my ears, the reason for suggesting a different amp pairing is up to the listener's preference, if you are someone who likes neutral/uncoloured sound, by all means, go ahead,if you want some flavours in your music, feel free to pair it up with tube or class A or iFi's amp which are known to add a certain characteristics/warmth. Audio after all is subjective and its not all numbers and measurement. Cheers!
