Good question, which I hadn’t really considered. Audio quality is my Achilles heel in terms of disproportionate spending and my HD700 are at the end of $4000.00 invested in electronics, which I’m very aware, is not necessarily indicative of a quality output.
Quite often it comes down to synergy, I’m quite happy with the output but will $400 give equal results, very possible, but the only way to find out is try them with your set-up.
Will the HD700 me more forgiving, my gut feeling says yes but I’ve found that more than any other phone Sennheiser in general scales better as more competent electronics are added to the chain, but be careful in which order one upgrades.
Bottom line though is if you’re not prepared to invest what it takes to profit from the full potential of a given phone will a much more affordable solution give you comparable results?

I listen to a range of music and though I know headphones cant conquer every Genre I would love a headphone that goes close.
I have heard the 800's are very picky and source can make or break.
I am not talking recording quality so much as amplification/DAC choices.
Is the 700 more forgiving in this regard?
