Glad to see a full review on Head-Fi regarding the Vali 2 +. A comprehensive review on a great little tube hybrid.

Thanks!

Thank you for the review!!! I've been having trouble finding information with this amp since it's somewhat new.

Though one question I had is that you mentioned it's linear sounding no matter what tube used, then at the bottom you mentioned tube rolling to add flavor. Does the sound gets effected by the tube much or not really?

For example right now I have Project Polaris, would trying to acquire this for a tube flavor redundant? (Since it's not really tube sounding?)

Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks!

Thank you.
You can add a little flavor and spice here and there with different tubes but the changes are not huge.
And above all the amp will still retain excellent technical performance with all the tubes used.
The tubes don't add peaks or dips.
They mostly affect harmonics and maybe extension to both ends.
So don't expect huge difference and I like it that way.
Mind you that I have tested only the mentioned tubes.

Ahhhh I previously read that Vali 1 gets a bit more affected by the tube but doesn't measure well, where as Vali 2 made no difference no matter what tube used but measures better. So Vali 2+ is said to be best of both worlds, but it sounds like it still doesn't get affected by tube too much (sound signature wise) it seems.

But thanks for clarification though! 🙂

The Vali 1 was with fixed tubes!
Vali 2 was tube rollable.
Now as a matter of fact all Schiit tube amps are not much affected by tubes in a way that frequency response doesn't get messed up.
And that is a plus in my handbook.

Ah didn't know about that about Schiit tube amps, it's something to keep in mind then. So would you say Schiit amps have their "house tube sound" then after that the tubes only scales harmonics and extension so it's a "more" but not "different" sound.

Cool good to know, thanks!

I am saying clearly that you can enjoy tube rolling flavor without messing up with frequency response , while retaining the amps original sound and technicalities.
That is with normal high quality , good measuring tubes.
Kindly check Vali 2+ APx555 measurements at Schiit website.
The frequency response is flat with the standard tube.
The same applies with the tubes I rolled.
So tube rolling will not affect frequency response unless some kind of special tube is used.

As an afterthought I hooked up this piece of gear as a preamp. My sole intent in buying it was for use as a headphone amp.
Using this as a preamp has truly transformed the sound of my system.
I‘m using a Mac mini as the digital front end with AIFF files, an MHDT Lab Canary tube dac, the Vali 2+ as a pre, and an Ideal Innovations Elite 80 tube power amp. Speakers: Omega Super 7 mk2 monitors with an Outlaw subwoofer. Cans: Senheiser HD555
Ala the above review I purchased an Electro-harmonix 6CG7 valve for the Schiit.
I’ve been swapping gear in and out of my setup (don’t we all?) over the years in search of THE sound. You know, the one in your head that’s the target you’re wishing to acquire. This almost by accident swap-in has given my setup the tube sound I’ve been looking for. Smooth, lacking glare, full, great definition, air, rhythmic…..in the room natural.
I’m still kind of stunned….Anyway, as always, your results may vary.
Now, to upgrade my headphones
