Thanks for your input. It shows how we all hear differently. When it comes to listening its not an exact science at all. I had two bifrosts and wound up moving on to different dacs for differing reasons. With the MMB2 I find that its just as good as the dacs I left B2 for. Funny how we change with time.

How do you like the NOS mode?
Unison?

Interesting, you referring to the 2/64? I do also prefer the OG to MMB2. It is a wildly different presentation - again in my opinion. I do most of my DAC analysis with my 2ch setup which is incredibly revealing. For headphones the differences to me are present, but less pronounced. MMB2 is a great release in it's own right, I just wish they used some of the same architecture as the BF2/64 as opposed to sticking with the AD design. Not a huge fan of NOS mode, big fan of Unison.
Overall it is definitely better than the stock MMB, I just wanted a mini BF2! :D

It looks like you're order of preference is MMB -> MMB2 -> BF2 -> BF2/64?

Also for anyone prioritising a darker / beefier sound, would you advise they stick with the MMB?

@Voxata I meant the original Bifrost not the B2 or B2/64 versions.
The OG bifrost (B1) I had the luxury of getting beta cards to upgrade and test here.
NOS with the MM2 IMO isnt something I would use much at all.
I do prefer the megacomboburrito filter mode for listening with. The MM2.
I have a nice 2ch steup that doesnt get much use. Mostly Headphones.
You guys with great speakers may be hearing more that we do with cans...
Most dacs IMO here with good cans are really close in what I can perceive.

@Andrew Randle For a Darker/Beefier sound MMB/MMB2 both fit the bill nicely. I'd say go MMB2 purely because it is the more modern design with Unison and is more technically proficient. It has a more modern sound profile and the bass is more present than MMB.

@adydula I've got a different experience than you when it comes to hearing differences in DACs, however when comparing I'm using pretty speedy SS amps. No tubes, etc. The sound changes between DACs can be subtle at times but with extended listening and as you get used to the DAC the differences become more pronounced. I like to use my AKG K712 combined with an HE-6 when comparing as I find between the two they can be revealing of chain changes. If you can't hear the difference consider yourself lucky, you will be fully satisfied without spending too much money down the audio rabbit hole. Have you ever spent time at home with extended listening sessions with Gungnir or Yggdrasil?

I’ve owned the Modi 3 in a second system (Cambridge CXA61 with Dynaudio 2/6 fed by Sonos Connect) for a couple of years. I’ve enjoyed the system which is generally cohesive and musical.

Recently swapped out the Modi 3 for a Modi Multi 2. Very surprised by the improvement even with this mid level system. The MMB2 made a clear and unexpected difference in the musicality and realism of the system. Much more clarity and ability to hear into the music with better inner detail, fullness and layering of instruments. Just sounds much more like real music. I thought the Modi 3 was a good Dac value and I still do. But the MMB2 significantly lifted this system to a different level. Surprisingly impressed.

Others may not hear a difference from the Modi delta sigma but I didn’t feel the improvement was subtle. Well worth the $$ to me. Everyone hears things differently but I would recommend this Dac for $300. YMMV….. Just my experience.

Btw… I owned a BF2 for a while with a Musical Fidelity/ Dynaudio system and wasn’t excited by it. I may not have given the BF2 enough time to burn in and don’t allege that the MMB2 is better. But I sold off the BF2 when I went a different direction.
