You described exactly how this driver behaves in a plastic MX500 shell. This is a very interesting cheap driver which has great potential.
On DIY Earbuds thread we discussed that for these DIY drivers it would be of great benefit in terms of sound enhancement to use pure silver cables,
possibly balanced 2.5mm or 4.4mm.
I recently finished 3 part project where I test 3 metal shells (different sizes) with this beryllium coated driver. See this 3rd part where you can find
also links for previous parts.

@furyossa Yeah it would be nice if there was some other options with metal shells that you can buy.

@RikudouGoku Hmmm... price is the problem. This driver is around 15$, the shell is free (goes with the driver), cable 7-15$. If the MX500 version costs around 50$, who knows how much the version with a metal shell or with the MMCX would cost. Probably around 100$ more or less.

consider the Monk VEs..... 10 bucks or so at AMZN and great sounding with excellent separation ....... I buy them 2 at a time and give them to friends using generic earbudS....great value for dollar

@navalgazer I had the Monk VE plus, hated it so much I gave it away for free. Also have the Monk lite, better than the plus for me but still pretty bad.

Sorry to hear that.... I have yet to be disappointed by any of the Monks I have bought (at least 5 pair now)....I have more expensive on and over ear headphones but only travel with my Monks and Sony wx1000M3s..... :xf_cool:

If you need a sharp sound, we recommend using an equalizer.
*use ear pads, S1650-130A (15.4mm, 130ohm, Beryllium) + MX500 shell

for 10 band equalizer.
# 31Hz (+ 0db), 62Hz (+ 0db), 125Hz (-12db), 250Hz (-12db), 500Hz (-12db), 1KHz (-3db), 2KHz (+ 0db), 4KHz (-6db), 8KHz ( -7db), 16KHz (-7db)

for Equalizer APO profile (Windows10) *use ear pads
# GraphicEQ: 31 0; 62 0; 125 -14; 250 -14; 500 -14; 1000 -5; 2000 -2; 4000 -10; 8000 -12; 16000 -12
