2nd question I can answer - yes, cocktail audio and nova fidelity are the same company.
I have neither of the above, I have a Benchmark DAC1, which it's equally as good as on solid state. I have a Lampizator dac4 which is r2r, but sounds better when put through my Arcam sr250 amp. My thoughts are that it should beat the Topping but you'd need a side by side with the Aries2. The real selling point of this is the tube or solid state, which will complement different types of headphones for those collectors among us
if you have a headphone amplifier you're happy with and you're just concerned about the DAC, then Willow Tree Audio are selling the Ares II for £750. I understand that the sq that comes out the other end is all important, so I'd try both on approval, for several hours.
