It’s kinda funny that by Head-Fi years this stuff is ancient, yet still talked about! I will take my Encore Universals to the grave..............maybe be buried with them!
Well, you wouldn’t understand how it sounds by a graph. If you read Pinky Powers review of it, he explains what the Encore sounds like, even better than my Encore review which follows. Just read Pinky Powers review as he nailed it. I purchased the Encore about 2 weeks after reading his review, that’s how good his review is. I went to a place and to demo the Katana and Encore back to back, but truly I already knew it’s what I wanted from Pinky’s review. I was just confirming it.
It’s a W response, but those highs you read off the graph are spread-out into this wide soundstage. The fact that the Encore has a warm tilt helps everything. I was just listening to it today, with the WM1Z and Totem cable in 4.4mm. Basically the bass is fast, almost neutral and BA, but the best style of BA bass. The middle mids leave a window where you can look down past the drawn-back lower midrange to see the bass action. I have around 3000 hours on my pair, they even sound better after 1000 hours burn-in! Something changed, for the better? But the midrange has a crunchy electric guitar sound, with all those BA making harmonics....plus vocals are also showcased. Normally I like V responses, but Pinky Powers review reminded me of the AKG k701in an IEM. Where it’s a little like that, only better balanced than the k701. Warmer and better pulled-off as a whole.
