Gee thanks mate. I think I looked up your endorsements to get these. I am so happy I did. These or the SZ2000s just cant be missed. I think they're bass legends indeed. Thanks mate... for showing the way :)

Really nice review! I also like your mod! So I am sorry that I have to correct you in one point, though:
> It’s quite, quite effective, and works like a crossover; the higher frequencies on the bass driver have been cutoff and no high frequencies from it reach the front.

Open the driver, desolder one wire of the the mid/high driver cable and listen to music again - you will be surprized. The acoustic chamber might be the reason the whole super bass pressure stuff works, but it is a very bad crossover. The same is true for the mid-high driver, where the only 'crossover' is the very small back chamber, limiting it in bass reproduction. Both drivers overlap a lot, and the slightly veiled or mid-present sound that they produce is the best compromize JVC could achieve with this design.

@ Phoniac:

Hmmm yeah you're quite right. And thanks for helping me understand though; I was wondering how they limited sub-bass production of the mid/high driver: with a chamber limiting it’s bass. Actually I used the word crossover just for better understanding. Yes I am sure the drivers may be overlapping in sound. No disagreement with you there.
BTW I do wonder, if they actually used a crossover, wouldn’t it be nice? Maybe improve things? Like those Cleer DU dual-driver headphones. They use same sizes for drivers (just a bit different sonically) and apparently crossovers as well.

The reason there is no headphone with a true full crossover like in HiFi speakers is (IMHO) that you need an inductor/coil as low-pass for the sub. This inductor must be big to not add distortion, especially for a lower crossover frequency that will prevent mid-range intermodulation distortion (let's say 250 Hz). Not to mention the big foil caps for real high.end sound. And there is no space for that anywhere.
As said the 'mechanical' instead of electrical approach JVC used in the 1000/2000 made them possible, and IMHO is quite amazing as well as ingenious. Hats off!

..and thanks for mentioning the Cleer Dual phones, I was not aware of them. Before I had the JVCs I always looked for such a design as I was extremely unsatisfied with most headphone intermodulation distortion performance. But now it's too late, and the Cleer DU will not be able to compete with the bass delivered by the JVCs. Fully cleer, so to say...
