How did you find the silver cable when compare with third party ones?

@Nikonkit It is hard to analyse because the only other option I have for it is a balanced cable, which I use with the Liquid Carbon on which the balanced output has more power than the standard output.

Honestly the weight of the headphone was almost a dealbreaker for me when I first received my set. You don't really appreciate the weight of a headphone until you have something that sounds great and is light, but once you do.. It was tough place to be with the HE-500, and I think I would have sold it had I not done the headband mod. The mod really is not too scary to do, and makes you forget about weight and (along with focuspads) makes the headphones very comfortable.

Good write-up. I absolutely love the HE-500. They can be excellent when modded, I have mine with the focus pads, extra headband padding, nicer cable, and I removed the foam filter from under the grill.

With these mods, the weight is a non issue for me. Granted, I might not be as sensitive to weight as others, but with the focus pads and padding they are comfortable enough to "disappear" on the head for many consecutive hours. They may not be quite as comfy as the MDR-F1 or the HD-650 (which is so comfy I use it in my bedside rig) but with these mods they come close.

I personally am not so sure about your determination that the bass of the X00 to be better. Personally I find the X00's bass to be punchier, but the HE-500 bass is more detailed and clearer. Yes, it doesn't have the bloom that a basshead may need, but it has a level of clarity in the low frequencies that is incredibly rare to achieve.

@intlsubband I wouldn't call the bass on the TH-X00 better necessarily, it just extends lower and is more pronounced in the mix. I personally prefer the HE-500's bass, with its speed and articulate sound that isn't too bloomy. I think it's very well done, adding a very fun sound to a neutral-warm pair of headphones.

I feel that I'll check out the mods in time. I don't see myself parting with this pair of headphones in the foreseeable future.

Great headphones. Best bang for the buck out there especially with today's prices. I also recommend the focus pads.
