Excellent review, Marhol!!!! you captured the essential excellence of the 400is in detail and with articulate description of its stunning performance and value. As a long time user of planar speakers in super high end audio speakers, i was struck with the wonderful balance of tone, musicality and detail of these phones, that reminded me of some of the best Magnepan systems and Apogee Diva system i currently have in my living room.
The combination of the Denon DA10 advanced dac/amp playing full CD Tidal streaming files out of my iPad retina is truly an amazing audio experience that rivals any other system in my home.
I can hear things deep into the music, the emotional intent of the performer, and the sound field of the instruments with great precision and lucidity. For example, when Gary Clark jr live blues album goes Jimi Hendrix style, the deconstruction of the chords into raining notes like a mission into starry outerspace is unparalleled. really incredible synergy with the above setup
I too auditioned the 560s, which are much more expensive and robustly built, but found the 400is more musically satisfying and cohesively communicating the emotional expression of the music. less detail perhaps and less treble energy, but more delightful are the 400is
Thanks for your excellent report back from the front of musical listening and serious exploration of this breakthrough headphone~~~~and i urge you to audition the DA10 unit to drive it out a usb digital source, it is truly some amazing engineering that has a warm analogue sound that is worth every penny of the Denon unit with the 400i!
