The wait time is definitely a deal-breaker for many. I think Massdrop should order batches of 500-1000 more frequently and drop them once they're ready instead of taking orders of 2000 before starting the manufacturing process.

@AdolfTrump I think the first 600 in the current drop ship as soon as the drop is over so there's more immediacy to this batch at least.

@AornicYeah, you're right. I couldn't resist the PH ones and I upgraded to them! Hopefully they turn out as good as these.

Excuse me for not reading the whole Fostex THX00 thread, but I would guess different pads would end-up being a soundstage changing factor. I have not heard the THX00 but own the Denon/Fostex AHD7000 and they have pretty good headstage performance. The pads in the vid seem just slightly thin, so this causes me to question the future options for THX00 owners to experiment with aftermarket pads? After years in this hobby my beginner DIY projects have reinforced ideas with regard to ear-pads having a huge effect on soundstage. Still there is also bass dynamics effects too, the farther the drivers are positioned out due to pad size and shape? It seems with the popularity of these Massdrop Fostex headphones a new business could emerge in regard to aftermarket pad manufacturing and design?

nice review! i was so impressed by its looks when i first saw it on Massdrop and almost ordered one at that instance but I was afraid of exactly the recessed mids, and now after sometime it seems most people agree on that. Glad I did not do a impluse buy.

Good job on the review.  I think you did a nice job of characterizing the sound.  (I'm reminded of the saying that writing about music is like dancing about architecture...).  I've been running my Fostex TH-X00 for a couple of weeks now and agree with your observations for the most part.  These are fun for rock 'n roll, although they miss the bite of the Grado's on electric guitar.  They are a bit over-ripe for cello music, giving too thick a body to the instrument.  I do find that with my tube amps the mid-range fills in more and the bass is less over-emphasized, so that might make it a more balanced experience for many people.  Small-scale intimate music is to die for.  Big orchestral stuff, not so much.  As you say, they are easy to drive, sounding decent with every amp I own.

Again, nice job.  These are not the second coming of the messiah, but they are darn nice for casual listening.  You did a good job of balancing objective observations against the big hype from the major Fostex threads.  Congrats!

...in the beginning I found mine soundstage-wise also rather congested. But actually the soundstage is improving a lot after some very serious break-in. It will be on eye-level with other, if not excellent but still very good closed headphones. I am just now enjoying it... @Redcarmoose, careful with changing pads to Denon's. I tried already, I changed to AH-D7000 Lawton custom pads. I also expected improved soundstage. But the X00 lost bass and sounded shrill :frowning2:
I came to the impression that the cavity in the Lawton pads, which seems pretty identical to the original Denon pad is too large for the X00...
@Aornic, you mention that when you first stumbled over the TH-X00 you had "little knowledge of who Fostex were and their wide reach in the audio game"... then you compare to your ZMF Omni... check out their webpage, ZMF is actually all about Fostex, Fostex & Fostex :)
