I very much prefer the sound of the AM1 to the sound of the AM2, so now I might take a listen to see, if the AM3 SE is really a step up for me.

Very good review as usual but the balanced test with the Senns would have been quite interesting as usually they like balanced drive. In your conclusion replace the first AM2 by AM3.

Also, I was under the impression that the AM3 is supposed to be priced at $99 USD like the other amp modules. I believe FiiO themselves have said so in a post, linked here. Unless they changed something...

I'll check with Sunny - but my understanding (probably due to the number of chips being used) is that these are supposed to be $200.  Once she comes back to me, I'll let you know

Even more balanced, eh? Yet tonally it's similar to the AM1, hmmmm.
What a strange predicament, the treble isn't overpowering like the AM1, is it?
It seems it would be less warm, yet, as vivid as the AM1, WITH the low-end as well.

I have to hear this to find out, well, might as well give FiiO more money. LOL.
