I have the E-MU Teak and I pretty much agree with everything you said about the sound. I do think the bass is very slightly fuller than neutral, but I love how I can feel the bass vibrating my head if there is low bass in the music. To me, everything above the bass range is nearly perfect-beautiful midrange and highs. Not sure how to explain it as the Teak is so smooth and maybe slightly warm but so musical at the same time. And the detail is outstanding.
 
I used to have Denon D2000's but always thought their bass was just too prominent for me, which obscured the midrange and highs. The Teak bass is much tighter and better than the Denon to my ears. I listened to the Denon D5000 and D7000 years ago and they had less bass than the 2000, but as I remember still had more bass than I like.
 
My only complaint about the Teak concerns the construction where the yoke that holds the cups pivots at the bottom of the headband. There is some 'play' here and you can see a small gap between the yoke and the piece it attaches to. I think I remember Fostex having this complaint and they added a nylon washer here to eliminate the play. I had the Mass Drop  TH-X00 and I think I remember a washer there and no play. I emailed E-MU about this a week ago to see if they have a solution for this but haven't heard from them. It doesn't hurt anything and may even be part of the design, but I would prefer a smoother movement and no play. If Chan is reading this review maybe he will respond.

Hmmm well my pair is pretty smooth. Friction-less during pivoting. Maybe it's your pair? I would like to believe the washer is there in this one too. I don't have this complaint.
 
Yes quite right. Bass is fuller. Complete in all aspects. Nothing's missing.

What the... God damn it. I'm a talk to chan. Buddy, you reach him on his email first: enquiry@emu.com. Check with him. I don't see any reasons to up the price. At that price, this review would become unfair. Talk to him first though. That's so out of proportion. Damn it.

That's not cool. The game changes at $999. That's Focal Elear price. That's just wrong. I guess at that price, the Fostex/Massdrop x00 should be a well worthy competitor for almost similar sound.

Direct purchase price is $449, or at least was when I talked to Chan.
 
Downside is that the entire ordeal took over a month of communication, lots of extra clarifications, and him not keeping his promised shipping dates and having sent off the cups he had me hand-pick to someone else for no reason.
He seems like a cool guy, but holy hell the hassle. I've cancelled my order due to all the delays, lacking communication and the cup issue, and will probably be going for TH-610s instead.
 
 
Sad, considering how beautiful some of the cups are that these guys put on their headphones, and considering the original selection he offered to chose from.

That is very strange to me. I didn't expect this would happen. Hmmm... Well, as annoyed as you have been, the TH610 decision may just have been better in your situation, albeit a more costly one. Anyhow, do get back to us with your views on that once you get it.

Am looking to write up or record a comparison between my D2000s, D5000 (Lawton stage 1) and the 610s once I've had them for a reasonable amount of time. They should be coming in by the end of the week according to shipping estimate, so I expect to get reasonable amounts of listening in later this month.
 
Luckily, the 610s only cost around $40 more than the E-MUs would've been for me post import tax to Sweden, so that's an upside to the ordeal.

It appears E-MU has little to no customer service. I have emailed them twice about the play in the headphone pivots I mentioned above and have had no response. The last time I checked the MassDrop thread I think E-MU was behind on those phones also. Doesn't take away from the great sound quality but as stated above it's frustrating.
 
As far as the sound quality difference between the E-MU Teaks, the MassDrop TH-X00's, and the new Fostex 610-I can say from my memory of the TH-X00 Mahogany that the bass is not as prominent and seems more detailed on the Teak. I'm also pretty satisfied with the highs on the Teak and seem to remember the Mahogany as being a little weaker in the highs although that may have been due to the extra bass masking a little of the highs. Haven't seen any reports on the 610 but I would hope it has a frequency response more like the Teak. 
 
Then there's the new Denon 7200 which looks more like the 610 but hopefully has a flatter response than the older Denon's. Denon is also doing some things with the housing and vent holes that Fostex may or may not be doing. The Denon may be close to the ultimate you can get from the Fostex driver. I think the 7200 will be $699, but there may be a 2200 and 5200 that are less expensive to replace the old Denon 2000 and 5000. 

Hmmm well that customer service thing is a bit disappointing.
 
Hmmm yeah in total, the 7200 will have less real-estate inside the cans because of the space for the removable cable installation housing inside. Don't know how that will affect sound. Let's see. We will need reviews. In essence, Denon may score a home-run on the 7200. I'm pretty hopeful, contrary to my earlier beliefs. Let's see.
 
Did you email chan? Maybe track him here somewhere. I'm begging to grow skeptical of my own warranty coverage and support now. I hope I don't need it in the future either. Hmmm that's huge negative.

Really quite confusing, honestly - hope they'll put some infrastructure into place as time passes.
