@OCC7N very much still in production as far as I know: iHA-6 here (unchanged since early 2016 if I recall correctly).
Which begs the question: will there be a Mark II?
Frankly, I also did not like the design of the volume knob at all when I first saw it in photos. However, as @kmmbd rightly says it does NOT look or feel cheap in the metal at all.
Of course, your opinion may well vary and that's just fine! However, I'll wager that when you first feel it you will admit it's damn good - smooth and hefty!
And (again in my opinion) not in the slightest bit bling...
Out of interest, which design(s) would you say approach being 100% successful?
Nice review! You might want to reconsider the con about the high z output from the SE jacks though, as it's a very important design feature for high z headphones. For those with 250 and 600ohm Beyerdynamics, and 300ohm Sennheisers, it's a Godsend. Some, like myself, find high z headphones sound rather dull and over dampened on ultra low z amplifiers (like the balanced out here). The dampening factor is so high in these situations. That's why many with high z headphones turn to tubes, because of the high output impedance and lower dampening factor. It's so hard to find a solid state with an output impedance above 1. IMO having a high z output from the single ended outputs is a Pro. Just my useless 2c though haha. Great writeup overall though, nice job.
@erics75 Thanks for your kind feedback and you make a very valid point indeed.
I must confess I have not listened critically to my HD6xx via the SE outputs. This is an omission I shall correct shortly.
The designers must have made a conscious decision regarding the SE outs and it was obviously to accommodate those (few, but still very popular) high Z cans.
