That battery life is a bit hard to swallow, and it sounds like there's quite a few kinks to work out before it becomes something I'd consider (no folder browsing's a bit of a deal breaker).

Thanks for the insightful review!

The only thing that drives me crazy is absence of folder browsing. If they fix all the bugs in firmware 1.0, It will be nearly as good as AK240. It can already beat AK240 in storage capacity. You can put a micro sd to SD adapter and insert two 256GB SD cards. Nonetheless, its huge capacity is not fully usable without a proper folder browser.

It's shocking how something so thick can have such anaemic battery life. Hopefully Calyx can improve that via software optimizations, though I suppose doubling it would be out of the question.

Thank you for the review!
That interface lag seems embarrassing, especially at that price point. I can see stutter in nearly every transition animation and the vertical scrolling seemed to be dipping below 10fps. Even if this was the best sounding DAP on the planet, I personally could not deal with the lag seen in this video. To be fair, I'm extremely OCD about smooth transition animations and vertical scrolling. I suppose it should be fine for most people.

lawl @kurochin I'm still using my hm801, I think battery is down to like 3.5 hours xD but ofc that DAP is a dinosaur now

still the "full bodied" sound of the Calayx M might win me over... it got a Line out

I think they custom-made their own interface, which is why the initial issues. For a company, spending many months perfecting it while holding off release they lose a lot of money, so at some point they have to decide it is usable enough and release the device. I gather they are selling like hotcakes in Korea though.

Because the DAC seems to be lacking that's where Light Harmonic Geek Wave or Geek Pulse would take over. Great device just needs a little help with other features.

Informative walk through of the player.  Interesting that Calyx is also iRiver?

@SilverEars Not sure if you saw the clarification: I said in the video "Same country". They aren't the same company. :)

Curra, does Calyx M sound better than Oppo's HA-1???
I'd like to hear your opinion.

@kawaivpc1 I didn't compare them, so I couldn't tell you. The problem is, also, they are radically different components, so I'd consider purchasing one or the other for completely different reasons.

I know they're made for different reasons, yet they're in the same price range. If you could choose one of them for sound quality, which one would you choose?

@kawaivpc1 Seriously, I wouldn't, because it depends on with what headphones or IEMs you intend to use them with, or whether you'd use either as a DAC, a DAC/amp, a DAP only and a whole bunch of other factors. So unless I was to do a proper comparison in that way, I don't think it is sensible to answer such an overly general question such as that.

With firmware 0.96 which came on my unit there is folder browsing if you want it.
