Could I use this with powered monitor studio peakers? Instead of the plugging the 3.5 from those speakers directly to my laptop motherboard? Would that be safe with this? Or would it try to amp the already amped speakers?

Yes, you can use a Dragonfly with powered speakers. I am using the Dragonfly Red with my PSB powered speakers and that combo sounds great. I also have a sub, which helps a lot.
How to connect: Computer USB port > Dragonfly > mini jack 3.5 mm cable > powered speaker.
The upgrade in sound quality is significant with a Dragonfly. I owned the previous two, and now the Red. Each one was better than the previous model.
