the mids do get better and bass becomes more defined. Highs come out a bit also, and even more if you take foam inserts out.
If you put velour pads on, the bass goes right down but it becomes more realistic, and a lot more balanced. Most people dont like it with velour, but i think they sound better with velour.

Do i care? No $70 is pocket change.

I have these, in red & black, and the SQ is great for portable usage. The comfort isn't the greatest - but SQ this good for the $60ish I paid it's more than acceptable.
