I guess my question actually is, do AKG headband wires loosen up over time or not? If so, I'll definitely get new ones as well as elastics to tighten up the clamping force for my head, which I guess must be small.

it's largely straightforward once you get them open. you just put them in place where the old ones were. If it's anything like the k270, you have to first pry off the medallion on the outside of the driver. The part that says "AKG" or, in your case, "K240". There should be a little slot to stick...
